City Council Approves Crackdown On Illegal Dirt Bikes

Riders of dirt bikes and off-road vehicles on Springfield streets and sidewalks are going to be receiving three-hundred-dollar tickets.

The Springfield City Council voted unanimously for the ordinance on Monday to allow police to issue the tickets.

There has been renewed focus on the illegal riding of the vehicles recently after multiple serious accidents.

The city is also waiting for state approval of a bill to allow the vehicles to be impounded.

The Springfield City Council is overriding Mayor Dom Sarno's veto on a new ordinance to send postcards to remind voters of upcoming municipal elections.

The vote was unanimous on Monday.

Sarno expressed concerns in his veto statement about the reminders turning into publicly-financed campaigns, but City Council members say there has been low voter turnout for the elections and the numbers need a boost.
